Blogging and learnings

November 4, 2014

As enjoyable as my blogging experience has been so far; I have realized that having thousands of creative thoughts in your mind is one thing and executing them and creating a blog post on it is whole another. Its been a while since I posted anything on the blog . I have been busy with a lot of projects these last couple of weeks. Blogging everyday is not as easy as one would think , specially if you have photo shoots, photo editing and other diy projects involved. Past couple of weeks I also learned that I need to take it slow and take one project at a time and post accordingly. With the new blog , I just got overwhelmed with excitement and thought I should be putting out a new post everyday, create something new everyday and so now I have so many projects lined up. But I am taking my time on them , completing them one at a time and you will definitely be seeing them here soon!

I also read some other blogs and stories about their authors and how they started out on their blogging adventures. It was definitely comforting to see that there was a learning curve for everyone. It is confusing, overwhelming and things don’t change overnight. You gotta figure out stuff , reach out , put in the extra effort  and hope for the best. It’s important to be motivated and take inspiration from where ever you can . I am all excited to take this further and definitely keep learning on the way.

Shopbox #2 – Navy is winning this Fall

October 9, 2014

Autumn is here and the changes are happening. Pumpkin cinnamon lattes are taking over cool lemonades. Pastels are being replaced by darker warmer hues. This fall I have a new favorite.. yup it’s Navy!! Actually I have been obsessing over this color all through this year and I think I am going to try out even more of it for fall. Burgundies, maroons and dark oranges usually dominate this time of the year but this year I am going Navy. Its dark, its sophisticated and it can be paired with all the pops of colors from the fall foliage.

Yesterday I used this color in my painting and thought I should put together another Shopbox to inspire you guys and like it as much as I do.

Shopbox-#2

Shop these items here :: 1) Fabulous coat from Zara. 2) Ring from Terrain. 3) I am definitely going to use these terracotta tiles from Tabarka Studio in my house. 4) Cute scarf from Etsy. 5) Embroidered pillow from Anthropologie. 6) Fedora hat from Topshop.

Make your own wallpaper

October 1, 2014

Wallpapers are back guys! I have been super obsessed with this trend recently and love the way people are modernizing this 70’s super trend to fit design décor today. Home renovation shows, design magazines and even in house/apartment tours shown on design blogs you will see that if done right, wallpapers are an interesting way to transform a dull space into chic and stylish one.
And the best part is you can now easily customize wallpapers with your own designs.Companies like ANWALL, TROVE, SPOONFLOWER, and many more are not only making this customization super easy but also giving you various printing, textures and color options to choose from.
Oh and all you renters out there trying to channel your inner designers but can’t get your landlords on-board, don’t worry guys! You’ve been covered too. I am sailing in the same boat as you are and we now have super simple removable wallpaper option designed for us.
So today I am sharing with you some of the wallpaper designs that I made hoping I will definitely use them someday in my dream studio space or bedroom space.. okay wait.. I can go on with this forever. But seriously there are some super fun ideas to checkout. I am also sharing some beautiful vignettes and spaces which inspired me through the process.

WATERCOLORS

This one is my favorite. Being an artist, I think I am biased for this one but I love that the wallpaper itself becomes a piece of art.

WP4FOR KIDS

Kid’s room wallpapers are the most fun but at the same time challenging to choose. You want to choose a pattern that would still work as the kids are growing up because let’s face it; Wallpaper is a relatively long-time commitment. You cannot replace it as easily as you would paint over a wall.

Here is a cool idea : Gather all the drawings and scribbles that your kids have created, scan them and make them into a collage. Enlarge and print it out as wallpaper. You may have seen this before; designers Cortney & Robert Novogratz from NYC have done this brilliantly in one of their projects. The best place to use this kind of wallpaper may be in basements of houses which are used as playrooms /family rooms. The kids love that their drawings are on the wall and it just makes the place so interesting.

COLLAGES:

This one for me is more for a studio than for home… but hey, if you are a traveler or a photographer maybe you could have it in your house too!

THINGS TO REMEMBER: The websites will suggest resolutions required however remember to click your pictures at high resolution (300 dpi or more) for as is and 600dpi if you want enlargements. Also it’s always better to order a sample before you go in for the actual order.

Keep an open mind while designing. Your drawings and paintings may not look as glamorous as in the pics but remember that when they get printed they will be digitally processed and will have a sophisticated print finish. Also imagine it in the whole space with the staging elements (accessories, furniture etc..) . That will help you look at the bigger picture.

Happy decorating!

SHOPBOX#1- Brighten up your monday

September 29, 2014

This is my first SHOPBOX and I am planning to make one every week for you guys. SHOPBOX is collection of some fun accessories and goodies I put together based on things I get inspired by. Today’s inspiration is this painting I created long time ago and it reminds me of one of those transition days from summer to fall when the leaves just begin to start turning color.

These for sure brightened up my morning and hope they pull down your Monday morning blues too

COLOR-INSPIRATION-#1

Like anything? You can get them here: 1) Ball point pen from Katespade 2) Marc by Marc Jacobs sunglasses available at Shopbop 3) Beer and now bottle opener by Gama-Go available at Modcloth 4) Stacked book wallpaper from Anthropologie 5) Neon-leather-coasters from Leif 6) Seaside lace up cut-out shoe from Topshop

P.S. I am obsessed with that pen and my head is exploding with ideas of using that wall paper. Already seeing a photo shoot.. But wait, let’s make that another post.

Happy Monday!

ABOUT

about-me-1HELLO READERS & WELCOME!

ABOUT DESIGNFORSOUL : My name is Varsha and I am the designer and creator of DESIGNFORSOUL.COM. After following the work of so many designers online, being an avid pinner and working as a designer myself, I knew I needed a space to put together a creative collective of my inspirations and ideas around design. Creating a blog + website was the best way to share my work and the work of other creative heads from different walks of life. Thus was born designforsoul.com

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Besides being a designer & blogger, I am also: An artist & photographer

My addictions: The Victorian Era, Moorish Architecture and recently Instagram.

My love for these will be forever: Salvaged wood & All things Brass

When I am not designing or painting: You will find me in the kitchen or DIYing with my husband. We love creating things – whether its furniture, art, sculpture or decor, and most of our house is an extension of our artistic sensibilities, handcrafted with love.

MY DESIGN PHILOSOPHY : Design to me is like any other emotion that comes from the heart. There are no rules in design but there is logic, and balance. Balance of high & low, new & old, blend & contrast. The process is almost like sculpting a story and building trust. Designing for someone is not just changing the aesthetic value of something; it’s changing the way they live and feel which cannot be merchandized. For me, being able to make a difference that powerful is the best part about being a designer.

Designforsoul is my happy place, I hope it becomes yours too and inspires you to live a well designed life!
