Wooden Coasters- A Simple DIY Project

September 26, 2014

Have you had one of those weekends when you don’t have any plans made with your friends but at the same time you don’t want to sit on the couch in front of the TV the whole day? We’ve all been there right? So what do we do? My husband & I took up a DIY project last weekend. Trust me at the end of the day you are going to feel good about it.

Title

Why Longhorns? Well we made these coasters for one of my husband’s friend who has a beautiful ranch house near Austin, Tx. So we thought longhorns on coasters were perfect! We were trying out the wood burning tool for the first time and the pattern was simple and easy one to begin with.

So here is a list of things you need:

Materials

1) Hot tool as a part of wood burning kit from Walnut Hollow available @ Hobbylobby

2) Wood stain (English Chestnut 233) from Minwax available @ Homedepot

3) Polycrylic protective finish (water based) from Minwax available @ Homedepot

4) &5) Brushes to apply stain and protective finish also available @ Homedepot

6) Different shapes of tips available to attach to the hot tool (part of the wood burning kit from Walnut Hollow) available @Hobbylobby

7) Sandpaper (optional)

Drawing&Burning Staining

After you are done with this step, you can let the stain dry then sand a little with a 150/180 size sandpaper and apply another coat of stain. This will give you a darker and deeper stain color. This step is optional and depends on your personal preference. If you are happy with the first coat you can go ahead and apply the protective finish after the stain has dried.

Note: We used pre-cut pieces of pine wood for the coasters. You could use any other type of wood  or shape for the same. You can increase the intricacy of the patterns once you get a grip of using the tool.

Try it out .. enjoy .. happy DIYing!

Hello there! I am Varsha. Welcome to my Blog.

September 25, 2014

September 2014 it is! This is going to be exciting…
Just quickly, a little background: I have been wanting to start a blog from early this year but dint know where to begin with .I had so many ideas in my head right from topics I would write about to name of the blog to showcasing my work etc. I knew I desperately needed help to channel my vision. Design has always been a passion of mine, so one thing I was sure of is that the blog is going to revolve around that. The world of blogging can become overwhelming for newbie’s like me. But after a lot of online reading, following different blogs and with the help of books like ‘Blog Inc’ by Joy Deangdeelert Cho of ohjoy.com; I finally knew where I would want to go with this. The book has interviews with different bloggers and their stories. It also is very informative about the dos and don’ts of the blogging world.
So back to the blog: It’s all wrapped up and I am ready to share Designforsoul.com with you. I am so excited to begin this journey and hope you will be there with me.
Leaving you with one of my paintings …
