DIY Color Blocked Tray

April 21, 2015

Hello guys! It’s another DIY project here on designforsoul today. Recently I just finished watching Mad Men. I know I’m late to the party but so glad I got a chance to catch up with the show finally. I totally loved the style, the mid century modern theme and the bright colors. Well today’s project is inspired by this theme. Also it’s spring time! which means more outdoor parties, pool side laying, barbecues n cool drinks. This DIY color blocked tray will definitely add fun to your entertainment decor. Hope you enjoy!

What you need: Wooden tray available at Hobby Lobby ( should be available in most craft stores), Painters tape ( By 3M ), Acrylic Paints ( I used Liquitex Heavy body, but any brand of your choice would do ), Polycrylic protective finish ( water based available at Lowe’s home department store ).

How to: Create a pattern of your choice. Use the painter’s tape when you color so that you get a good finished look. Also I would suggest to just draw it out on a piece of paper and write down the colors to be used in each block. Just so that you don’t end up putting two same colors next to each other and also you kind of get an idea of how you would balance out different colors evenly. I kind of started painting directly and decided on the colors as I proceeded . Somehow that works for me. You could do whatever works best for you.
